Ear piercing is a milestone that transcends culture, religion, age, and gender - but that doesn’t mean there aren’t questions, especially when you are a parent making this decision for a minor.
Medical Safety
We are the only piercing studio backed by a Medical Advisory Board, and each of our piercings follow the Rowan Clinical Piercing Standard®- a set of stringent protocols and training guidelines developed to prioritize customer safety at every step of the ear piercing process. Rooted in medical best practices, this standard encompasses sterilized equipment, the exclusive use of hypoallergenic earrings, and detailed aftercare support. Designed to align with a nurse’s professional training and ethical standards, we offer a safer, more hygienic experience for customers of all ages, and it’s helped us to achieve an adverse reaction rate of less than 1% compared to the industry average of 30%.
At its core, the Rowan Clinical Piercing Standard® requires that all piercings at Rowan be performed by piercing nurses only with hypoallergenic earrings always.
Piercing Methods
Device piercings are performed with a hand-pressurized device which is in complete control of the Rowan piercing nurse’s hand to guide, position, and pierce safely. It is nothing like a piercing gun. This method can be used for any piercing placement along the outer perimeter of the ear and utilizes butterfly or bell back earrings.
Device piercings are available to anyone 2 months or older with a valid DTaP vaccination. The DTaP vaccine is required until the age of 5.
Needle piercings are performed with a single-use, hollow bore sterilized needle. The needle piercing method can be used for any piercing placement in the ear and utilizes flat backs specifically designed for optimal comfort and healing. Needle piercing jewelry is compatible with interchangeable posts of different lengths.
Needle piercings are available for children ages 5 and older who can sit independently and follow instructions. The ability to remain still is essential for the safety and precision of the procedure. Some studios may have a stricter age policy due to local rules. Because safety is always our priority, our Piercing Nurses will assess each child’s readiness and recommend the safest option. If a needle piercing is not appropriate, a device piercing will be suggested instead.
Product
What you put into your piercing is equally important as the piercing itself. All of our earrings are hypoallergenic & biocompatible to minimize the chances of allergic reaction to different types of metals and help the piercing heal safely.
Come in for a post downsize (for needle piercings) or complimentary nurse evaluation (for any piercings) about one month after your piercing, and our Rowan piercing nurses will help you determine if you’re ready to swap your earrings!
It’s important to keep hypoallergenic earrings in 24/7 for at least the first year after getting a piercing to ensure proper healing.
