Getting an ear piercing is a milestone filled with excitement! It’s normal to feel some nerves before your appointment, but following these tips will help make sure your piercing is a fun and memorable experience.

Here’s what to expect during your appointment:

At Rowan, you can be sure you’re getting the safest (and most fun) piercing experience available. All of our piercings are performed by nurses, and all of our jewelry is hypoallergenic. We also adhere to strict hygiene standards in our studios.

When you come into the studio, you’ll pick out your jewelry and discuss your desired piercing location with your nurse. Then, you’ll take a seat in one of our piercing stations, and your nurse will sanitize their hands, put on fresh gloves, and assess your ears. Next, your ear(s) will be sanitized and marked with a sterile surgical-grade skin marker on the spot where you want to be pierced. Once you take a look in the mirror, you and your nurse will discuss whether the mark is in the spot you want it. Then, we pierce!

Before you leave, our piercing nurses will make sure you’re equipped with all the aftercare and product knowledge you need to care for your new piercing. We even offer an Advanced Aftercare Solution and a Piercing Pillow (great if you’re a side sleeper!) to help you in your aftercare process.

Here are some tips for all ages to make sure you have a safe and celebratory experience:

1. Eat a meal or snack before your appointment (but avoid sugary sweets!)

You want to go into your appointment feeling your best, and the key to this is maintaining your blood sugar. Eating a well-balanced meal or snack before your appointment will keep you comfortable during your visit. You want something high in protein combined with a slow-acting carbohydrate. A great example is a rice cake with peanut butter and a banana.

Sweets are best when eaten after your appointment. Not only is it a great way to celebrate, but it’s also good to have them on hand in case you do begin to feel light-headed. Fruit juices or other fast-absorbing treats (like gummy bears!) are best.

2. Drink plenty of water

Staying hydrated is important for any activity or event, and it’s no different for ear piercing! Make sure you’ve had plenty of water prior to your appointment to help you feel your best and help prevent potential light-headedness.

3. Pick your placement and bring inspiration

We want to bring your piercing vision to life! Any inspiration pics or ideas you have are helpful to our piercing nurses, but if you’re not exactly sure what you want, don’t worry! Our piercing nurses are experts in ear anatomy and will help you find the perfect placement for your first or next piercing.

4. Be prepared and have fun!

There’s no better place to celebrate a new piercing than Rowan! Every piercing is a milestone that deserves to be celebrated in an environment as safe as it is joyful. Bring your besties with you and get ready to walk away with a new core memory.

And here are some tips specific to our littlest ears - babies:

1. Timing, timing, timing

The best time to pierce your baby’s ears is when they are happy and calm, usually right after eating and a nap. Scheduling an appointment that works with your baby’s routine will help ensure a fun and stress-free experience for you and your baby.

2. Bring distractions

Distractions are key for babies and toddlers. Bring a favorite toy, stuffed animal, or tablet to keep them entertained and happy during their appointment. For younger babies, pacifiers or bottles are great ways to distract them from the small discomfort they may feel while getting pierced.

3. Be ready to feed your baby immediately after the piercing

Babies are developmentally inclined to be comforted by having something in their mouth, particularly a food source or a pacifier. Preparing to breast or bottle feed your baby right after their piercing will calm your baby and distract them from any minor discomfort they may be experiencing.
